Couple and four children die in Huy house fire

The deaths of six people including four children has shocked Belgians across the country, both south and north of the linguistic divide. The six died in a house fire in the town of Huy (Liège Province) last night. The fire brigade was called to the house shortly before midnight, but was unable to rescue the occupants of the property, a couple and four children. The cause of the fire is not yet known.

“Last night our town experienced great tragedy,” Mayor Eric Dosogne, posted on Facebook. “A family, victims of a fierce fire, could unfortunately not be saved. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and their loved ones.”

“We were contacted just before midnight and called to a fire in a building where people were still thought to be inside,” fire officer Christophe Jadot told Francophone media.

“On arrival, we found a wall of flames. As we set to work and entered the building, we found one victim, then two, then three…” Eventually, firefighters found the bodies of six people: a couple and their four children.

The fire was brought under control, but it also caused a power cut in the local area, which was not completely sorted this morning. The Liège public prosecutor’s office has sent a fire expert to the scene of the tragedy to make the necessary observations.
