Zurich airport welcomes 30% more passengers in 2023, still 8% short of 2019 numbers

ZURICH: Zurich airport sees 30% rise in passengers in 2023, but still below pre-pandemic levels Zurich airport, Switzerland’s largest, welcomed 28.9 million passengers in 2023, surpassing its target of 26 million and showing a 30% increase from the previous year. However, this was still 8% lower than the 2019 figures, before the Covid-19 pandemic hit the aviation industry.

The airport operator expects to fully recover by 2025, according to a press release issued on Monday night. The airport also recorded 247,456 flights in 2023, up 14% year-on-year, but down 10% from 2019. The freight volume was 377,998 tonnes, a 10% decrease from both 2020 and 2019. In December 2023, the airport handled 2.19 million passengers, a 15% increase from the same month in 2020, but a 6% decrease from 2019. Of these, 1.5 million were local passengers and 680,900 were transit passengers. The number of flights in December was 18,888, a 7% increase from 2020, but a 6% decrease from 2019. The average number of passengers per flight was 133, a 5% increase from 2020. The seat occupancy rate remained at 77%. The freight volume in December was 34,688 tonnes, a 2% increase from 2020, but a 10% decrease from 2019.
